Back in 1803 the first deer were introduced to Australia. We take our name from that date, because in a way that’s when our story began. My family has been sustainably and ethically farming red deer on rolling pastures near Orange, Central NSW for 32 years. The idea of 1803 began with a commitment to the nose-to-tail philosophy and a spirit of collaboration. 1803 works with talented Australian artisans across four states to use the antlers and hides, which are the natural bi-products of deer farming.
Together we make products that are authentic, natural and sophisticated. Our artisans have developed rare and traditional skills, and they value the process of working with these beautiful materials. Their attention to detail and the care and time this takes means we make our premium products in small runs. In everything we make there’s an integrity that we are really proud of.
The 1803 collection is all about the sort of natural elegance that comes from pursuing what is simple and authentic. We keep processing to a minimum, so that every 1803 knife, leather, suede and antler design is rendered unique by the character of the natural materials. No two pieces are the same, which is exactly how it should be. Bespoke and limited edition designs are available on request.

Where do you get your inspiration?
"I am inspired by my family, our beautiful deer and the country. 1803 is committed to ethical, sustainable and artisan production that minimises waste and uses the whole beast to create products that are beautiful and uniquely Australian. I am very proud of the story within every piece we create."
What has been your favourite piece and why?
"This is a difficult question as every piece in the 1803 collection is designed and crafted with great care and skill. Tom's hand-forged blades partnered with our antler handles make for very special and beautiful knives. The herb cutter and hand-turned wooden bowl as a unique piece is timeless and practical."
What is your favourite material to work with?
"Our deer leather and suede is tanned by Tony in South Australia. He creates soft, buttery leathers that celebrate the natural markings of our deer, which soften and patina beautifully with time and use. Our leathers and suedes are naturally luxurious to see, touch and smell."
If you were to expand your product range to something entirely different, what would it be?
"Deer leather and suede is highly regarded in fashion. In looking forward I would love to collaborate with Australian designers to create limited edition items of clothing that embrace our natural, elegant style."
Describe your products in three words...
