Brown Crate is a Victorian based workshop, creating products that are handmade and of modest design.
All designs are centred around a basic construction style using accessible plywood and laminated timbers as the main focal material, however other elements such as recycled hardwood and steel are also used in Brown Crate designs.
Brown Crate products draw on retro design principles using a modern finish, taking inspiration from past popular furniture styles of the 1950's and 60's and the homemade/self built ideals that were incorporated in that lifestyle. Each design within the label is also compact and multi-use in its own right.
The Brown Crate range features pieces that are useful and sensible for all areas of the home including furniture for the kitchen and the living room and storage items such as cabinets and crates.
All designs can be modified to accommodate your preference.

DESIGNED + MADE IN
Where do you get your inspiration?
"I am inspired by the modernist furniture and architecture of the 1950's and 60's, as well as the Australian architecture of today."
What has been your favourite piece and why?
"My plywood chair was the result of lots of drawing and prototyping, and was definitely something I worked hard on to achieve a particular aesthetic."
What is your favourite material to work with?
"Plywood and as well as other engineered timbers really interest me. They offer different characteristics and strength in different ways, as well as being unique in how they look. It’s a pity many people think of plywood as simply inferior compared to solid timber furniture."
If you were to expand your product range to something entirely different, what would it be?
"One day in the future it would be great to design bigger things and create low cost, compact housing that everyone could afford."
Describe your products in three words...
"Modest. Practical. Plywood."
