DarkLight Laser uses laser technology to craft a range of personalised artisan homewares. They specialise in heirloom quality Redgum chopping boards, bamboo presentation platters and coasters. The designs are varied, including Australian flora, popular culture, celtic and pagan themes as well as modern monograms and medieval themes.
Being both functional and decorative, Redgum boards make a truly wonderful addition to any kitchen. The boards make great wedding, anniversary, house warming or birthday gifts for anyone that loves cooking. If well cared for they can be handed down through the generations; they really are that solid.
The Redgum chopping boards made from Forest Stewardship Council certified timber grown in Victoria and are manufactured by a team of master joiners. There are four sizes to suit all cooks – starting from the little herb board at 15 x 25 cm all the way through to the ginormous 35 x 50 hardcore chefs board. Each board is hand sanded to a satin smooth finish, lovingly coated in organic timber conditioner and then hand buffed.
DarkLight Laser holds strong social and environmental values. The studio is run from onsite solar supplemented with 100% accredited Green Power. Wherever possible all waste is composted or recycled.
DarkLight Laser supports the 'Australian Made' ethos by using as many locally sourced products as they can, in turn supporting local Australian businesses.
DESIGNED + MADE IN
Where do you get your inspiration?
"I get my inspiration from many different sources. It could be a book I'm reading, a TV show I'm watching, my cat or something I saw on an afternoon walk. I tend to create designs based on things I love. This results in my collections being varied and eclectic rather than 'on trend'."
What has been your favourite piece and why?
"My favourite piece is a Redgum board that was gifted to a woman that rescued stray and badly treated farm animals and native animals. I designed a board that included the entire farmyard; chooks, ponies, dogs, goats and an assortment of parrots. I love crafting and customizing the perfect gift."
What is your favourite material to work with?
"I love working with timber; Redgum boards are my favourite. The Redgum is able to be sanded to a satin smooth finish and the resins in the timber react well to the laser. This combined with the engraving produces a lovely strong contrast. I love selecting just the right board for the design."
If you were to expand your product range to something entirely different, what would it be?
"Glassware will be available shortly. I'd also love to start working with reclaimed timbers such as pellets and old fence timbers. Another area of interest is unique garden wall art; that would be very exciting."
Describe your products in three words...
