Dave and his wife Viv have been making furniture together for 25 years. Dave had been making fine furniture for 5 years prior to that. They saw the opportunity provided by the access to recycled jarrah from old buildings in and around Perth, Western Australia and started making a range of tables (dining, coffee and side tables) that incorporated old iron and showcased the character and beauty of this rich resource. The designs from this period are notable for their elegant simplicity.
Over time the range expanded as demand grew for more sophisticated designs which included chairs, tables, beds, chest of drawers and more. All these pieces are made using solid timber. Even the drawer bottoms are solid, usually camphor for its nice aroma and insect repellent quality. Traditional joinery is used and all chairs are mortised and tenoned.
Ironwood Studio furniture has been sold from galleries in Western Austrlia and New South Wales and has gone to all parts around the globe. Dave and Viv make furniture that is meant to be used and last many lifetimes.

Where do you get your inspiration?
"The arts and crafts movement and minimalism. We don't like fussy designs. We generally aim for elegant simplicity and functionality."
What has been your favourite piece and why?
"The blanket box. A deceptively versatile piece of furniture; it can be used as a coffee table, side table, dining table at a pinch, TV stand, storage unit and seat. It also showcases unusual timber very well and incorporates some nice visible joinery in the form of dovetails."
What is your favourite material to work with?
"Jarrah. Without a doubt the nicest timber we've worked, and what a range of colour and grain - we love it!"
If you were to expand your product range to something entirely different, what would it be?
"Guitars. We're currently working on some guitars made entirely from Australian timbers and they're shaping up very nicely."
Describe your products in three words...
