RAW BY DESIGN
Raw By Design is a new venture for husband and wife team, Scott and Daina. With Scott’s background in carpentry and building and Daina’s in architecture, ideas have been forged around making beautiful and functional products that resonate with ideas of sustainability, sense of place and the ongoing lives of materials.
The philosophy of Raw By Design is centred around using natural and recycled materials where possible and giving them new life. There is a focus on materials that are true to their essence. Thus, the strengths of each material used is celebrated rather than pretending to be something they are not. There is incredible beauty in the simplicity and imperfections of raw materials and Scott and Daina love to see how they change and improve (usually!) over time.
Many of the materials used were destined to be building waste and have been salvaged from Scott’s building sites. Their recycled materials have a history, some having been rafters, joists, stairs, flooring and framework from Sydney homes.
Raw By Design believe it is important to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, so what better way than to create a new life and story in their products for all to enjoy in their homes.

Where do you get your inspiration?
"The natural landscape has always held each of our imaginations captive. We enjoy exploring how natural materials can be used in different ways, yet are aware of strengths and weaknesses of various materials.
Sense of place is important, especially to our scented products, inspired by the native flora of Australia."
What has been your favourite piece and why?
"Scott: My favourite is our wooden toy helicopter. It represents fun and childhood memories. I love the idea of robust, handmade, natural toys with non toxic glues or finishes over easily-breakable plastic.
Daina: I love our copper candles - the patina of ageing copper and crackle of the wood wick!"
What is your favourite material to work with?
"We love to work with recycled Australian hardwood.Knowing it is local and ethically sourced is reassuring and having the opportunity to continue its life is incredible.
It is relatively easy to work with and provides such beautiful grain. The markings of a life gone by are a bonus!"
If you were to expand your product range to something entirely different, what would it be?
"We have so many ideas!
We would love to create some larger items such as recycled hardwood furniture, artwork and other household fittings and homewares.
We are always interested in improving and expanding upon our skillsets!"
Describe your products in three words...
