Retrograde Furniture is an established company that specialises in custom recycled timber furniture and kitchen bench tops. Designs are both timeless and modern, with an emphasis on letting the timber speak for itself.
Based in Abbotsford, Victoria, they focus on using locally reclaimed hardwoods to make furniture and interior timber work that is rustic, yet refined. Australian timber is so naturally beautiful that sometimes its best left to shine on its own. Retrograde Furniture love using recycled timber not only for its beauty and charm, but also because of its extremely low carbon footprint. Not only does it reduce landfill waste, but it eliminates the need to cut down new forests and reduces the use of all of the resources required for logging. It's a win-win!
Stock designs are customisable in size and they are more than happy to discuss any custom items that you may require. In fact, a large percentage of output is completely bespoke.
All furniture and bench tops are delivered with two coats of a natural, plant-based hard wax. It's a product that is durable enough to be used on hardwood floors, yet food safe and commonly used on children's toys. Their most popular finish is a satin-matt blend, but this can be adjusted upon request.
Interstate shipping is available on most items.
DESIGNED + MADE IN
Where do you get your inspiration?
"The simplicity and functionality of the Scandinavian aesthetic has always been something very appealing. Being from New England, the classic American colonial style has also been influential. Combine those with lovely Australian timber, and you can have heaps of fun."
What has been your favourite piece and why?
"Jemima, our American oak table with 'X' legs. It's a great mix of functionality and beauty, the legs allow chairs to be placed anywhere on the table and oak looks stunning paired with the white powder-coating. It would be at home in a beach house or a CBD high rise."
What is your favourite material to work with?
"Messmate! It's hard to beat the natural character and beauty of a well-seasoned piece of recycled messmate. It's also unpredictable in a fun way - each pass through the planer reveals a new layer of history and depth."
If you were to expand your product range to something entirely different, what would it be?
"It would be really great to get involved with lighting. Lamps, chandeliers, lampshades all look so much better when timber is involved."
Describe your products in three words...
